MetLib Conference 2026: Call for Contributions

Planning for Futures (Be Bold)

How are metropolitan libraries evolving to meet the demands of the next century? We are looking for insights into the future of our physical spaces, the shifting nature of our collections, and the emerging skill sets required to lead the libraries of 2126.

Libraries are institutions with a centuries-old history that still prove indispensable every day, in a world where technology develops at a dizzying pace and geopolitics leaves us breathless. At MetLib 2026, we will explore scenarios for the future, both distant and near, through three dedicated tracks.

We want to hear your experiences, grow our collective knowledge, and interact with the global library community to explore and dream about scenarios for the best possible future.

Themes and Tracks

All proposals should align with one of the following tracks:

  • The Future of Learning: What will learning, reading, and information processing look like in the future? Will it be entirely driven by technology, or will there be other influences? What does that require of our learning today?
  • The Future of Technology: GenAI is creating a different information society, different systems, opportunities, and ethical considerations. What does this mean for libraries?
  • The Future of Resilient Cities: How can a library contribute to a valuable and resilient social infrastructure in cities facing pressure from politics or climate change?

Session Formats

We are looking for engaging activities that allow participants to choose a specific track or combine different ones. Available formats include:

  • Lightning Talks (5 minutes): Share a short and sweet look at a project, video, or infographic.
  • Interactive Workshops (30 or 60 minutes): Hands-on sessions that involve participants in new and engaging ways.
  • Small Group Discussions: Facilitate an exploration of a specific future-focused topic.
  • Innovative Programs: Host a 30-minute demonstration of an innovative program your library currently runs.
  • Scenario Working Sessions: Propose a collaborative session where participants work together on concrete future scenarios for metropolitan libraries.

Submission Details

  • Submission Deadline: April 1
  • Notification of Acceptance: Early May
